Template Revamp

Ok, the RC spamming by me is over. I've revamped the Templates page, here's basically what I did - if there is a problem with any step, just let me know and I'll try to fix it. If the whole thing just is crap and it's decided that the old way was better, here is the version to revert to.

  • It looks all pretty now with a header and such.
  • Templates are split into 8 categories, so it's more organized and easier for people to find a template to use, like when they don't have one in mind but want to use one.
  • A full list is still available uncategorized, it's linked to in the header.
  • All the former functionality of the page is still there - for "parameter" templates like {{fifty}} and such, it still shows examples that work.
  • It's much easier to add a template to the list. There's instructions on a subpage linked to in the header, but for most templates you just add it to the list like this:
    • {{tdemo|Template Name|Any category tagged on to template}}.

Notes:

  • The headings are screwing up, they would only show the templates in the NEXT heading, so I took away edit section and the table of contents and just added "jump-to" wikilinks in the beginning and links to edit the sections, plus I commented in each sections that the names of the section would be wrong, just so there'd be no confusion. If anyone knows how to fix this, let me know and I'll get to it, but the way it is now works fine if you use the links towards the top of the page.
  • Not directly related to the templates page: if you ever want to link to a template and have the braces around the name, you can go like this:
    • {{tname|name of template}}. For example, {{tname|rainbow}} yields {{rainbow}}.

Discuss. Miltopia 02:19, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

It's a simple enough system, I can't see how Anybody could be confused by it. I mean people here of course, not untermensch. --Chemical smelly 02:33, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Speaking about templates, why do we have a template conglomerating the United States together, but not The World? Nation articles are all over the damn place.--Chemical smelly 02:37, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

{{internet}} changes.

Alright, this template has undergone a change in use. It can now tag the date it was put up, so if it's been up for a while, the stuff can be deleted. The only problem is, you have to substitute it now. But that s not a big deal.

  • To use: Look at {{internet}}, it gives you instructions. PLEASE SUBSTITUTE THIS TEMPLATE FROM NOW ON.
  • To look where it is tagged: Also look at {{internet}}, it gives you a link at the top. DON'T CLICK THE "WHAT LINKS HERE" THING - you need to click the link at the top of the page. Since the template will be substituted, it's what links to that image, not the template itself, that will show what is tagged.

Miltopia 07:36, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Just did s/{{internet}}/{{subst:internet}}/ on all articles. I also set the date on the subst'd templates to the original date of inclusion of the {{internet}} template for every article. ~ Krade hi yo~ 13:58, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Category:Music

Please read this discussion. I think something does need to be done -- in fact I think Category:Music should be changed to Category:Shit Bands, and the Shit Band article resurrected for all the crappy stub articles people write (because they DO, right Zen444?), with actually funny, relevant articles being allowed to exist intact. WHAT SAY YOU, ED? Tfo 21:39, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

  • FLOOR GRND. Miltopia 21:43, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
  • We have genres in there and some other non-bands, which is why I told Zen444 to use category:music in the first place. --SheneequaTalk 22:57, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Sadly, this breaks all the cheap but funny lulz based on a stealthlink to shit band. Redirecting shit band to Category:Music is fucking weak and turns "lol" to "what." Either bring back the tl;dr article (at least) or make a Shit Bands category (o noz omg noo category) and subcat it to Music. --Neurophyre 05:40, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Or it could be renamed Shit Music and shit band also be resurrected. --Neurophyre 05:44, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
    • While having this category makes it easy next time Yirimyah gets in a fight with his girlfriend and goes on a deletion rampage, I totally agree with Neurophyre -- rename the category and recreate shit band so we can cram all those fucking stubs into one giant gif-ish article. OR ELSE SOMETHING. lol. Tfo 17:33, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Oversight

I have no idea how "permissions" work from wiki to wiki, but is there any way for us to get an Oversight feature so things like this and this and this don't happen? For smaller articles like Vchan it doesn't really matter, but for high-profile/historical pages like these, it's kind of cool to see the development of the page, who started it, who worked on what, and just how long it's been up. Miltopia 23:29, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Scratch that maybe: I can see from the lol deletion that most of the revisions were restored - I guess you can pick and choose revisions in the delete/restore process. Can that be sort of made into standard practice in the future, and done on insane and Duke Otterland? Miltopia 08:12, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
    • I fucked up on the Otterland restore. Oops! WILL BAN SELF NOW. Tfo 01:57, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Popups

Popups support might be cool, but me thinkee that these are necessary:

$wgAllowUserJs  = true;
$wgAllowUserCss = true;

I have no idea about the security implications, but I think it's pretty limited. I haven't gotten a local copy of popups.js to work on my test wiki, but Template:navpop is working there just fine with the Javascript sourced from TOW. --Neurophyre 03:47, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

  • Only the user themself and admins can change a user's js and css, so no security problems unless a sysop flips out. --SheneequaTalk 11:27, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
    • K, well then it might be good to implement. I'm still learning it on TOW but after you figure out how one-click revert works, that's nice. Plus you can get a popup diff of edits and shit. --Neurophyre 19:00, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
      • Question: Is there any way to have it NOT say "blah blah blah boring boring using popups"? Because that would absolutely kill my recent changes boner to see that a hundred times. Miltopia 06:05, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

FIGURED STUFF OUT.

I've done some more research on this and it seems that hotlinking the Javascript file from TOW is allowed, or at least condoned in Wikipedia:WP:POPFAQ. Here is what needs to be done on our end to get it working:

1. Set these in LocalSettings.php

$wgAllowUserJs  = true;
$wgAllowUserCss = true;

2. Create ED:popups as an explanatory page about it. I'm going to go ahead and do this ahead of time.

3. Install the query.php extension at [wikidir]/extensions/botquery/ -- get from http://evernex.com/wikistuff/botquery.tar.gz

4. ln -s [wikidir]/extensions/botquery/query.php [wikidir]/query.php

5. Paste the following into Special:mypage/monobook.js for any user who wants to use the script. {{subst:navpop}} --Neurophyre 05:47, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Moving from Archive

I'm moving this out of archive because it still hasn't been implemented, and I'd like to see it done. After having used popups on TOW and some of my own projects for a couple weeks, I'm hooked. It's really very good. Pls can we get it added? --Neurophyre 06:02, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
