A GIF is an image file with a 256-color palette and 8 bits per pixel.
The most notable thing about GIFs is that you can make animated images with them. This leads to MySpace and Freewebs pages full of shitty animated angels, birdies, smoking skulls, and "email me!" icons. Users of blogging sites like LiveJournal are permitted to have small user icons, which has led to a booming underground trade in 100x100 pixel GIFs of animu characters fucking, as well as teary, shrill "YOU STOLE MY ICON!" flamewars.
A page full of animated GIFs loads slowly, which -- along with embedded MIDI files and large images shrunk with size tags -- is one of the top reasons that every crap Geocities-style personal webpage, despite having no content whatsoever, takes at least an hour to load all the way. Some people actually use animated GIFs as their background, which is asking to be shot.
This page used to be every GIF on ED. The idiots running the site finally found out that all their bandwidth went to it.

- A small gang in America who hate blinking images have begun hunting down and ending some of the lives of people who make GIFs. Many people rant about taking them off of YouTube. It is currently unknown who (and where) the members of the gang are. There is uncertainty if there even is a real gang at all, and whether or not they truly performed homicide.
Many GIFs can be found either on the /gif/ image board on 4chan and/or Jj.am (the same content). Most of the gifs there are porn, but there are also some general lulz images there too.
