We have lots of folks on the spectrum at ED, and if you read the page carefully, we're mostly making fun of the ones who claim they have Asperger's yet refuse to actually do anything about it. (i.e. if you really have Asperger's, get some actual help and stop using it as an excuse to be an asshole.) If you're still disturbed by this article, perhaps this would be a great time for you to notice that we're like this about everything. No, really.
We realize you're probably not the most socially savvy person on the planet, which is why we're telling you right now that trying to change our minds about this is pointless. I was diagnosed by a doctor many years ago, before AS became an "internet phenomenon", so I'm also a member of "old school", although I'm only mildly afflicted compared to most, so I don't meet most AS stereotypes. While this article will certainly rub some people the wrong way, what more do you expect from a website that also pisses on the Holocaust? Fundamentalist Christians can get angered at the slightest provocation, they get roasted on ED and you expect us to get a free pass? Anyways, while I don't know any "self-diagnosed" Aspies, this article brings up a great (albeit, twisted) viewpoint about taking personal responsiblity rather than falling back on your condition as the "be-all, end-all" excuse for your stupidity. I work for the Canadian federal government raking in $40,000 a year, I'm a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and I extend my martial arts knowledge to younger kids with similar disabilities. My mother and my instructor always taught me not to fall back on AS as an excuse for failure; that advice is the reason where I am today. I remember when 1Justin was banned from asperger (though I didn't see it, I heard about it) and I can tell you that the community "aspergers" has been deleted and purged for quite some time - since before 1Justin's banning, certainly. Well before. I don't know anything about what happened to it or why, alas. SO AS is now a fad diagnosis like ADHD? My inner... something... is chuckling right now. I was diagnosed ADHD at about 14 and AS at 22 (1996). Imagine... the things that made me so weird once... are now making me (and others!) so KEWL!!!111

(Actually, I hate the spelling 'kewl'. And I hate that these disorders are becoming fads, because it takes away from understanding for those who actually *do* have these disorders - ie, it may become an all-too-common misconception that "Oh, AS is nothing, you're just socially inept" or worse, "AS is nothing, these are just loser kids trying to be cool" or there'll be another over-medicating frenzy, if there hasn't been already, as happened with ADHD.

I know there are people out there who will fasley claim these diagnoses for attention, or something. I wish they wouldn't. Believe me, if I had a choice, I'd gladly hand the disorders back, along with any coolness points they might give me. I might keep a trace of ADD, though. It allows me to multitask. ;) And now that this comment is way over-long - I will apologize, and go back to reading the encyclopedia. (Anyone who has AS or knows about it can surely recognize the AS traits in this message - the makers of this site probably intend everything to be funny and tongue in cheek, and here I come over, and give a more serious reply. The link provided doesn't fit at all with the content of the article. The guy is dismissing Aspergers/Autism etc along with stuff like ADD as all being fictional diseases. As in, not that there are real people who have it and that it's easy to fake, but rather that no one's faking it at all, it's who they are and it's just being a social deviant or someone who doesn't conform to civilized society or at least, whose parents disapprove of them. As for all the people calling themselves autistic or whatever for attention, that's lame if you use it as some sort of excuse for being a lameass. On the other hand, if you happen to have the hobby of finding BS psychological problems and collecting them, making fun of the autism concept by saying "yeah I'm a bit autistic because I like Tekken more than dating" is actually just fine. Claiming that you have Asperger's Syndrome can be a pretty good 'get out of jail free' card for people who are just antisocial and want an excuse to act like toddlers. Most people who actually have AS try very hard to hide it and fit in with society, and are usually decent people to be around. I have a case of AS (diagnosed by a psychologist when I was 9 years old), and I've only told a few of my closest friends. Actually, in the movie there was a segment on how people were ineligible and then these people said to a rep they were so happy they finally could get health care and the rep later told Michael More that she was crying inside because she knew they'd be rejected. Then the movie did a long list of things that would make you uninsurable. I put in that segment right while seeing the movie and this edit clearly was by someone who watched the movie when it came out in theatres. But Michael Moore claims aspies can't get any health care. The ASSPIE RELATED health care isn't covered by a lot of providers because they don't think it's an actual problem. They're not denied entire health insurance coverage. I've navigated the shitty waters of health insurance in this country. I am aspergian- I don't much mind if you have a laugh. I am pretty ok with it, I get laid- just the relatioships always fail- c'est la vie. I would be butthurt if I never got laid though. I am one of those self-diagnosed assholes, and I am disturbed by this article. Really.

I know this Wiki is satire. I know it should NOT be taken seriously. I don't take it seriously. I know satire can be offensive, and I don't have a problem with that either. What the hell, offend as much as you want, i wont complain.

But there is one problem. It's supposed to be funny, IT IS NOT FUNNY! REALLY. The whole article, with some exceptions, is just a long angry rant. I find it pretty surprising this sindrome can cause so many negative feelings among ED editors, but it's not like i care. BUT, keep your ranting to yourself. Nobody wants to read it.

Asperger's has become a fad for those seeking to garner attention unto themselves. In the fine, hallowed tradition of disease whores everywhere, many of today's youth expertly design a disease which kills two birds with one stone by 1) assuming others are born normal rather than work at it, giving the aspie an excuse not to make an effort to develop social skills, and 2) assuming they were born smart, rather than merely having had more exposure to books and computers because no one wanted to be around them. Naturally, like any other medical condition, autism can be fixed simply through heavy medications or a good slap upside the head.

What the hell is funny with the above section for instance?Upon a closer look, i find the last sentence, about treatments, a little bit funny. The whole page is like that, with a few exceptions.

There seems a number of aspies here who like to complain about people with self-diagnosed AS. A bit of clarification: A self-diagnosed aspie is someone who has not (yet) been officially diagnosed, due to ignorance from parents, ignorance from doctors, or any other reason. Do i need to remind you that AS is a quite new diagnosis, not gaining popularity among professionals until ~1994? Aspies who grew up before 1994 has not been diagnosed during childhood, but still has a chance to find the Wikipedia article about AS, realize they're probably aspies, and eventually seek an official diagnosis. I am not less of an aspie than you, just because i don't have any formal dx.

And the bullshit stating that self-dxed aspies are just loners seeking attention. I wonder if you really are serious. If you have reason to think you have AS, you probably have AS. If you see AS symptoms is yourself, then even if you wouldn't get an official dx, you still have these symptoms, and therefore a lot in common with the Officially Diagnosed Aspies. This article is total lulz. I'm self-diagnosed, but I have real reason to believe I have AS (crazy hand-flapping when I get really excited, "He's taking off!" - my dad; total fear of social situations {can't even watch a tv show with uncomfortable social situations without getting anxious,} tested high IQ {Air Force recruiters clamoring for me to join [lulz, I'm not a moron,]} etc.) I would like to point out though that with actual AS it's hard enough just to go and SEE a doctor to get diagnosed at all. I can't even talk to unfamiliar people easily without being drunk or generally doped up. The part about severe social handicaps with actual AS is SRS BSNS, RLY. It seems too many people make it up and use it as an excuse for lame behavior. These people need to be ridiculed. And people who actually have AS can take a joke.
