Haters, the web 2.0 Troll.
“Haters”, the blanket term that has become common use on YouTube to describe people who for most of the internet’s life, in places on the web where interactivity and discussion forms a large part of the goings-on, were called Trolls.
These people seek out, encourage, and initiate “flame wars” - attempting to goad people into arguments, not with the intent of having a meaningful debate, but simply to get people angry. To get them riled up, establish aggression and generally try to make other folk feel bad.
Their calling cards are easy to spot – in place of questions designed to encourage debate on whatever issue is being discussed, or statements on what their own opinion is and why you will instead find them usually spouting off simplistic one sentence statements, often accompanied by personal insults unrelated to the discussion, inflammatory remarks, inaccurate and/or absurd rants, sometimes the childish namecalling is the only mark they’ll leave. Words like “fag” seem to be a favorite. Often their statements are seeded with deliberate mistruths, again for no other purpose than to provoke an angry reaction from others.
For example in a discussion about racism, a topic certain to have a lively debate, a “hater”, instead of sharing his or her opinion for or against the original subject in a mature and reasonable way, will instead seed a comment filled with hateful racial slurs and generally try to be as offensive as possible – obviously he expects to be able to sucker people in to “fighting back” against his “racist hate speech”. Chances are high that in “real life” he would never, ever use the language he posted online to someone’s face, he knows he would face very real consequences – The internet provides this person with the security of anonymity, they feel they can say and do whatever they like and suffer no consequences. They feel absolutely free to be the biggest possible dickhead they can be, and laugh with glee as people fret, scream and allow themselves to get completely tied up in his “trap”.
They feed off the attention and aggression they inspire. And not just from the people arguing against them, but from their fellow “haters” who chime in to reinforce the behavior and add more fuel to the flames.
Recently, a youtube user, who’s name I will not mention because I’ve no interest in feeding the troll, has had his account suspended. I have no idea what the official reason is but he insisted on fabricating a laughable conspiracy where I was responsible.
I suspect it’s the beginning of a crackdown on people who do nothing but deliberately manufacture controversy and hate on the site. His latest video he put up in particular, was full of idiotic rhetoric and flat out lies designed to baselessly defame and attack an innocent person who was simply doing exactly what was asked of him by the new “guest editor” system youtube has employed in order to give users more say about what gets featured on the front page of the site.
This man always attacks high profile users because in doing so he’s guaranteed a large reaction. For 15 years he’s made a career, online and off, of attempting to feed off peoples ignorance and prejudices, while simultaneously reinforcing both. I think perhaps it’s often nothing more than jealously expressed though vile hateful methods, and being passed off as “satire”.
The sole purpose of his (now suspended) account, (one of at least a dozen he’s created), was to manufacture controversy, attacking folk for no other reason than they’re a high profile user, and therefore a easy target for some mutated form of the tall-poppy syndrome. Often ignoring any real evidence, or even simple logic, that would easily disprove his deluded conspiracy’s, which by the way are works of fiction he creates, not actual delusions he believes. It’s a simple formula, and it works – people, so enraged by his apparent idiocy are tricked into falling into arguments with him again and again.
He insisted on telling me he has “nothing to do” with sites like encyclopedia dramatica, even though that subject never arose. Doth he protest too much? I don’t care if he does or does not have anything to do with the vile hate being passed off as “satire” on ED, he’s done nothing beneficial for youtube or the community. He specializes in breeding hate, paranoia and distrust. He is pathetic. For the record, I like encyclopedia dramatica, a lot of the stuff there is hilarious, as is the purpose of the site – but “Haters” are using it not as a tool for light hearted satire, but instead to spread lies, hate, defamatory material, and photoshoped porn of innocent and pleasant people. Do you know what these people are to me? Parasites.
This unnamed user, had an interview, about what it is he does for a living, several years ago. In that interview he compares shows like “jerry springer” to Hollywood movies and states they’re the same thing nothing more than innocent fiction, it is laughable to me that he thinks they’re the same in their goal of “innocent entertainment”. One is a story telling device allowing people to use it for escapism - the other is a parasitic attempt to exploit and feed off peoples ignorance and prejudices, while simultaneously reinforcing both. I don’t know if he genuinely can’t even tell the difference, or if it’s just the excuse he uses to justify what he does to people.
People like him offer nothing worthwhile to humanity. They are a bottom feeding hanger-ons, having no talents other than selfish exploitation of their fellow human. They leech from people with real talent in pathetic desperation to have all eyes on them. I have absolutely no respect for him or people like him. I almost pity them, but cannot find it within me to hold the empathy for them that it would require to do so.
He was extremely mad when he discovered his account had been suspended, accusing “them” (and me indirectly – as be blamed me as the “ringleader” that got him canned) of “censureship” …
I will assume he meant to say “censorship” (to block or remove objectionable content) as opposed to censure (To severely criticize).
I have no problem with “them” censoring people like him, who’s sole purpose here is to be a jackass and make things more unpleasant, attacking other users with weapons made of idiotic conspiracy theories, lies and twisted logic that boarder on delusions belonging to a paranoid Schizophrenic!
I expect, and indeed hope, this will become more common. People like him are making things needlessly unpleasant on youtube, and are causing very real damage to people who just want to have fun there. I’ve seen people attacked, harassed, stalked, their personal details revealed for the purpose of encouraging others to continue the harassment, people brought to tears, felt forced to stop using this site under threat of further harassment. I’ve seen good hearted family men accused, absolutely baselessly and without a single shred of proof, of being PEDOPHILES! If these actions has happened face to face in the “real world” some of these “hater” people would be in a court of law by now, answering to all manner of charges.
The owner of this freshly suspended account “threatened” to “take it public” and “expose” the censorship.
I’d be excited to have more people know about the consequences of being a good-for-nothing asshat filled with negativity and hate on youtube. So, mr I won’t mention your name, you go for your life and try to sensationalize this into yet another idiotic conspiracy theory. I will be happy to laugh at you - at length.
You’ll forgive me for what I’m sure “mr ketamine” (another “hater” who’s every video has something negative and hateful to say about someone else – usually a high profile user – big surprise) and his drones would call being a “nazi” about this, but I don’t see a place or purpose for people like that to be allowed to do what they do unchallenged. And because of the nature of what they are, that challenge cannot be in the form of further heated argument or debate - that is their desired payoff, they WANT people to point and yell and argue and fight… instead, denying them their goal altogether is far more effective.
I do not EVER discourage different views or debate, rather as many of you have seen in my vids, I encourage it - but these people have only one purpose and one goal, and it is not to make this a better place, or encourage meaningful debate.
I sometimes approach “hot button” topics in my vids. But it is never to to make people angry, or (as I’ve been accused of) for the purpose of hits or subscribers, I don’t value those things highly- though I appreciate having lots of people to offer different opinions - I do so for the love of communication. To allow people to react, and in doing so, hopefully consider or re-consider their opinions and beliefs. I do not seek to change anyones mind, only encourage them to ask themselves if their mind needs changing. This includes myself. For one cannot reply to an issue unless one examines how one thinks and feels about it.
There are always people who have knee-jerk reactions and spout their canned responses in some kind of Pavlovian reaction. Sometimes I will challenge their comments, ask questions, point out a flaw in their argument. It is never to just poke the bear for a good loud growl, but rather an interest in finding out their motivation. To discover why it is they hold that belief.
In this way what I do when I seek motivated reactions differs significantly and fundamentally from what the “haters” do when they attempt to provoke angry responses. You’ll note also that only perhaps 20% or so, maybe less I don’t know, of my videos are on “hot button” topics. the rest are made to simply entertain, or to allow me to vent on some silly quirk.
I’ve always had a burning desire to learn new things, explore possibilities. To that end, even as a child, as far back as I can remember I recall dismantling my battery operated toys to figure out how they work, no doubt frustrating my mother. In this instance, on youtube, you might say I’m an occasional student of human nature.
