Confusion on Pronunciation
Alright, just clearing up some stuff here. Confusion concerning pronunciation of the word appears to be due to the fact in different languages it is in fact pronounced differently. Suffice to say if you're American it's pronounced with the long 'E' as noted above. If you're French, pronounce it however you want. To counterpoint my own point though the word is not American/English in origin. To further elaborate the word is taken from a French words meaning memory which is why so many jerkoffs like to pretend they eat croissants and pronounce it 5 different ways past Tuesday. Yes, Dawkins is not French but he borrowed the word from the French. Dawkins himself noted the pronunciation should rhyme with cream, scream, dream, and Steve McQueen. I.E. long 'E' Not that its a big fucking deal. Is arguing about the pronunciation of the word meme a meme? NinjaChan 13 February 2008 (CST)

"Pronounced meme" not funny
Seriously, this site is supposed to be used to help clear up confusion and give accurate information.
Getting lulz by misinforming people of the pronunciation of "meme" is not funny, it's just lame. If you want to make yourself feel superior by knowing something newfags don't, go somewhere else. This is supposed to be an Encyclopedia, not an Uncyclopedia.
I, myself, didn't even know the correct pronunciation of "meme" for a while (until I looked at a dictionary). It's not common sense, so it's not as much an obvious pronunciation as oldfags think.

- I would usually agree with you on those ideals, and I usually try to push for them as much as possible. ED should certainly document things as accurately as possible, but I don't think it's such a big deal in this case. If you really need to know how to pronounce it, it takes about 30 seconds to enter it in google search or to go to an online dictionary, and even then, you should already be able to deduce that "me me" sounds fucking retarded. Thing is, we're not really misinforming people, we're just not informing them at all, which I find funny. Again, this isn't like some other material on the site where it's really hard to find the story or information on a topic. This is something that's very easy to find. Actually it is misinforming people. By putting "pronounced meme" it's natural to assume that means "me me." If you removed the whole "(Pronounced Meme)" part, that would simply be not informing at all.

actually the term wasn't coined by that dawkins-guy, it's a part of wilhelm reich's orgone-theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Reich)
and for pronounciation, i can't think of any english word with the exact sound like in the latin/german origin, but "maim" comes pretty close ("mem" does not).
