Congratulations on joining ED! You probably fit into one of these categories:
- 1. New User
- Before making your first article look over ED:101. Try checking out random articles and fixing typos, grammar and/or bullshit where you find them before trying to make a new page. To start with, make multiple small edits to different articles until you have the hang of it. If you don't, it is unlikely that your article will survive for more than sixty seconds and you risk being molested by ED Sysops.
- If you don't know anything about wiki formatting and code, please read ED:BASIC and the Style Guide. Take your time and start slowly.
- 2. Mediawiki Migrant If you're an experienced wiki user (probably from a Wikipedia offshoot) who knows how to operate, please read ED:101 for offical policy and ED:MIGRANT for tips on assimilation and basic rules.
Whichever you are, to successfully contribute to ED, please take some time to look around, note why other people get banned and don't act like they did.
Communication with other users prevents misunderstandings and can be done through talk pages, TJC and the mailing list.
If you plan on sticking around, feel free to make your mark on the ED:Map and join the ED Facebook, the ED Myspace and the ED Bebo.

Please don't move or remove this welcome message. Some poor luser will think you haven't been welcomed and will post it again. Then you'll remove it again and someone else will post it. And so on and so on. Anyway, you obviously haven't paid sufficient attention to it. Just looking around for a while, you'll see that blanking pages or removing comments from a talk page is considered very poor etiquette here. I'd only make an archive if the talk page has become very long and the material several months old. I just found your reply to my previous advice. Very amusing:
- Yes, I have paid sufficient attention to it. What haven't I paid attention to? There's nothing on the welcome message that says LEAVE THIS ON YOUR TALK PAGE PLZ KTHNX. That would be why I archived it to its own page, so that I could save a reference to it while NOT cluttering up my talk page. I'll take the advice of leaving it up, but I disagree with my 'not paying sufficient attention to it'. I know how to use Wikis, thanks very much - I've been using them for quite a while now. Have I edited any articles much less blanked any info in any article? No (and if I did, I'd have a damn good reason, I do know Wiki-etiquette). I only removed the welcome message from my page. Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm really not an idiot. I suggest against making any such assumptions. I don't think you are an idiot, but I do think you are tending towards a little arrogance and do not yet have a great understanding of this wiki and its community. You might know the etiquette at some other wiki, but you don't know the etiquette here. Nor will you ever learn if you merely contradict it and delete the helpful information provided by those of us who have been here for some time.
I also noticed that you are leaving little messages in the summary field. My first response to you was not "overly PERSONAL ATTACKING in tone." I said "please" and provided an explanation, and I didn't saying anything personal about you at all. I clearly explained why we'd prefer that you leave the welcome message here, and that is all I did. Any "tone" was read into it by you. I understand that you are new here and probably not aware that we have a custom of leaving comments in talk pages. We treat this like a thread in a polite discussion board or a instant messaging conversation or even a verbal conversation. You can reply, but you can't unsay what someone else has said. The only exception would be pure vandalism or spam... or, of course, huge, verbose and completely unenforcable regulation notices posted by some n00b who doesn't realize this is a Sherrodcracy.
All I'm trying to do is inform you of the way things work around here, and the peculiar etiquette that has been established over time. My intention is not to attack you personally. I want you to be accepted around here, establishing yourself as a useful and valued contributor. To that end, I suggest you step away from this talk page and your user page, and that you move towards chronicling some of the plentiful lulz and drama that is available on the Internets. --Jacknstock 11:17, 25 Feb 2006 (UTC)
