Helping Newbies

Based on what I've seen in Recent Changes, you know what you're doing here and you're a good contributor. As long as you're not pretending to be a sysop, it's perfectly fine for you to give other people pointers. We can't really catch everything and sometimes it means more coming from another user. My only suggestion would be to make it constructive - give the person {{dummies}} and {{newarticle}}, maybe something like {{lurkmoar}}. Some people like to spam stuff like {{noniggers}} and expect the person to know what that means - all that does is confuse and piss off new users - so I'd recommend avoiding it. White•Mystery

I would like to explain why I keep removing the information from the EQ2flames entry in ED. The information I am deleting is about myself, and its not only false, its rude and not "satire" nor anything resembling an encyclopedic entry. I do not want that kind of information posted.     • Nope, sticking with EQ2 since it's my last MMO (due to funds and my parents hating MMORPGs to the core, I'm 18 but still live with them for now.) I could ask EQ2Flames for you - Ebonlore, I think, deserves an article of their own, instead of in the AoC or EQ2(flames) or WoW articles. I've noticed them in EQ2 before, too, they were always trying to exploit or do something to get them b&.

Do you think I should make an article about EQ2 on its own? EQ2Flames is just the tip of the iceberg of drama associated with that game. I'm also thinking of starting a Vanguard article, since the MMO has brought so much disappointment and fail upon its release, and Brad McQuaid being a total pompous ass. (I honestly think SOE should just put it out of its misery and send the devs to EQ2, and add more challenging endgame content than this solo shit, but that's a whole different topic.)

With EQ2Flames at my disposal, I'll try to get as much MMORPG info as possible. EQ2's my second real MMO, the first being Final Fantasy XI but I hated that game so much and I would rather do something that the Angry Nintendo Nerd would rather do than play a shitty game ever again. Gah, that's a tough one. I played WoW for 3 years and between WoW and AoC I tried City of Heroes (liked it, but had a bitch of a time with the interface), Hellgate, and Tabula Rasa. Just today I looked back at Hellgate and TR again to find that Hellgate still fucking sucks and TR still has no upper level content after months. I'm a bit of a fag and I get a real kick out of crafting so when I looked at the preview of Warhammer online and saw that it was two shitty professions I gave up on that, too. After playing UO and watching friends play EQ2, crafting in everything else seems pretty lame. So to answer your question in the longest way possible...   • Anything new that doesn't suck? Well, since you already tried AoC... I have no idea. :< You haven't mentioned Lord of the Rings Online - have you tried that one? I know one of the devs IRL, he's awesome. I heard it's even more casual than WoW though, so if you haven't tried it, I'm not sure if you'd enjoy it. What I don't recommend is Final Fantasy XI - I hated it myself, since 5 races, three of which you can choose the gender of, and everyone is basically a cookie-cutter (if you don't choose the correct job/subjob combination, good luck finding groups lulz,) and crafting's a bitch. I've always been an FPS fan and both that the The Agency are promising to be real MMOFPS's, as opposed to the funky hybrid shooting system that AOC and Tabula Rasa went with.     • Exactly. I'd ask Nagafen for help but most of them are just like what I mentioned above, WoW fanboys (on an EQ2 forum, yep,) or just retards in general. If I could, I'd be glad to rewrite it but I know shit about AoC except for tits, blood, Norway, love-it-or-hate-it, etc. There are plenty of MMO articles I'd write/contribute to, but some really don't belong on ED (there's piratesonline.com, a basically-free MMORPG based on Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I've tried it once and it was so bad it was almost unplayable due to massive memory leaks, everything aggros, etc. Vanguard needs an article too, IMO, since the drama/lulz it brought from Sigil, and SOE was like "LOL U GUYS" and told McQuaid to go away. But who the hell plays that game now?

Anyway, have you looked up Darkfall or something? I heard crafting is a huge part in that one.

  • Yeah, actually, lol. First, if you read the Starfox comics from Nintendo Power, Fara Phoenix was actually supposed to be in the game, but they replaced her with Miyu. Fay was actually going to be a sheep prior to the alpha release, but they decided against it and went with her instead. There were two alpha releases, E3 appearances, but right before they were getting the beta out, Miyamoto canned it, saying he wanted to make a clean break between SNES 3d games and the N64 games. Plus, Starfox 64 was predicted to come out about the same time, which it did not, instead coming out a year and a half later. Production costs could've also played a factor in it. Most of this can be found on wiki, since no official statement was made about the game's cancellation. Buut, the game is available on emulator, and a patch is floating around somewhere on the internetz which allows the Japanese text to appear in English.     • I don't remember where I got my copy of SF2 from, but after checking sites and finding some want you to *pay* to get the game, I decided to upload my copy, along with the emulator. You can get it here. It's actually pretty fun for a never-released game. Now that I think of it, I do remember a while ago a Starfox site I used to go to (OTG) said the game was leaked, so I prolly got it from someone there. As for Fay, there's a limited amount of art from the game (just headshots like in the first starfox), but fanart is surprisingly well-done. Some examples are here, here, and here (there's more if you search "fay starfox" on DA, lol). Thank god somebody finally posted a dickgirl on my talk page! It's a highly complicated formula involving diversity of content, quality of the article, and interest to readers. Or if an article gets vandalized a lot and I think it would be funny to piss the vandals off. Or if I feel like it. I haven't read the entire article, but it's got some good points in that you don't have a bunch of huge pointless lists - you pick out the outstanding members and discuss them, and leave it at that. My biggest suggestion would be to expand the appeal to people who aren't familiar with the site. Documenting more major trolls and a gallery of good screenshots would be a good start, and even trimming the lists down slightly. As someone not familiar with the site or the game itself, I sort of passed over the lists once I read the first one or two points and didn't have any context to relate, but they are by no means as lengthy as lists on some other articles. If I had to point you in the direction of another article or articles, I'd say Second Life and Patriotic Nigras would be good starting points. Since the coverage of the game focused primarily on the drama and trolling and not specifics that people with the game would be familiar with, it was palatable to a large number of readers and quite popular. I see that this article is new. I feel that this article need more drama beyond the tracing and the ensuing drama.

Most people who trace/copy WILL react negatively (make public denials) when exposed. This is true from Disneyfan to Cgad to Vanillakitsune.

Looking at the article, I'd like to offer the following critique for it's improvement.

1. The tone of the article needs to be more satirical. At the same time, the tone of the article needs to be more professional, detached manner and less gossipy for it to be taken seriously.

Right now the second person narrative that constitutes much of this article sounds like a poorly researched personal vendetta against this tartlet. Much of the very limited text needs to be written in a more detached, objective manner, couple with clearly screencapped evidence to allow users to truly see the faggotry of this tartlet, rather than being "told" how bad this person is.


2. The events that traspired need to be described in better detail.

Consider the Following:

"Last Friday, When is this? Date PLZ? in the peaceful realm of the Complaints Forum, storm clouds brewed over the grayish-green meadows that is dA. A harsh thunder erupted as one particular deviant by the name of chareD cried about how people were accusing her of tracing her recent submissions involving Batman and the Joker . Surprisingly, the people in Complaints were supportive of her, except one. Armed with his image depicting an overlay of the now-baleeted "Lets put a smile on that face" by chareD, he brandished his weapon out in the open, frightening the peasants of dA. How could one person say otherwise and not assist this fair young maiden in her time of need?

chareD retaliated, wielding her YouTube video of the speedpainting of the same image, but it was no match for the armor of kombat-unit. "

This entire area need to be less narrative metaphor and more concrete info of what transpired. Instead of external linking, this area might be better supported with juxtaposed screencap and comments

Clicking on those external links take the user to 10+ pages of Discussion on the DA forums. Once cannot expect ED readers to weed through all of that, and the event should be presented in a much more easily accessible, and concise manner.


3. Overall, more research, more drama, more drama beyond tracing and "omg how can accuse me of tracing ?!?"

Blingee

Funny you should say that. I'm sure you've noticed that I uploaded a shitload of blingees recently. In fact, I just finished the article yesterday (based on your rough draft you had going in your userspace). It was one of those articles I had on my to-do list for a while, as well. The only problem is that when I put too many images in the gallery, I can't view the page. As in I can't preview it, save it and view the page once it's created, nothing. I thought it was because the files were all too large (many of them were several hundred kb), but even once I optimized them to all under 150 kb, I still ran into problems. I think I'm gonna go ahead and create the article with a small number of gifs in the gallery, then just add them from there. It doesn't make any sense to me, though, because there are many articles with much larger galleries, and none of images are even particularly large in this one. Is there any way that you could believe this is not a troll. I mean srsly look read the OP. It sounds ridiculous, but this is getting a lot of attention in /complaints/. They raided it's profile and journals pretty good last night. Read this journal for some of the lulziest commentary I have seen in a while.
