It was about 7 years after I first played Chrono Trigger that I realized it was an exact retelling of the Christian fable-- the main character has a last supper, is betrayed, dies, and is resurrected due to the immense faith and love in the hearts of his followers.

It just now dawned on me the that the story of Secret of Mana is an exact retelling of the Kali mythos, and that some of the Phannah and Dyluck subplot involves some of the hidden gnosis of the Kali cult. The kind of thing that isn't randomly retold in oral history, undocumented in mass produced literature and that you can only bear witness to by going to a hidden shrine, drinking blood, and killing something. And like any proper retelling of the Kali myth (like the one an ascetic devotee gave to me), it had anti-establishment undertones and expressed resentment towards the techno-industrial complex while favoring simple incipient agricultural lifestyles.
